When looking back at the original Ladybird series one thing that always amazes me is just how many books were published on wildlife and nature. The whole of series 536 was about nature and when you see the list of titles together you quickly realise just how much they cover. Everything from flowers and trees to sealife, birds and rocks and minerals. Together they are the perfect grounding for future Chris Packhams and David Bellamys.
Pond Life is just one of the books in this series and an excellent example of the genre. It opens your eyes to the huge amount of life that is in and around even the smallest of ponds.
There's a double page on everything you might find there. Mallards, frogs and toads, pond snails, beetles, spiders, dragonflies and so much more. The accompanying art work is beautifully detailed, but also managed to have a vintage look about it, despite the subject mater being something which doesn't exactly change with time.
First published in 1966, Pond Life is just a timeless classic. There's only one thing you can really do after reading it – get a net and go pond dipping to see what you can find!

What beautiful illustrations! And the nature series was my favourite as a child. This week we’ve posted on Talkabout the beach over at Mrs Fox’s;

Looks like a brilliant book, it really is timeless. I love how the Ladybird books are full of so much detail even though they are children’s books, and all the illustrations are just beautiful. I’ve joined in this week with a historical one, all about Nelson http://www.jenniferslittleworld.com/2013/08/ladybird-tuesday-nelson.html

Thats funny – when I went looking for a book to feature this week I actually pulled two options off the book case and the second one was the Nelson book! Thanks for joining in again x
