This is what I could hear being shouted up the stairs at me over and over again as I changed Master C's nappy the other afternoon. Little Miss C been playing with the children's calendar that we'd bought her for Christmas and spotted the letter C in the word calendar at the top.
We're now at the stage in LMC's development where she's started to notice that letters are all different and she's beginning to learn what some of those letters are. Her excitement in doing so is infectious and something that I only want to encourage. We drove into the supermarket carpark earlier in the week and when I came round to open the door to get her out she very proudly pointed at the big Sainsburys sign and told me that the supermarket "had a big S for snake". How can you not love that?
It's fascinating watching how this development stage is progressing and watching what she picks up on and what doesn't really work for her. I know all children are so different in this way, but I'm hoping to use this blog to record what works and doesn't work for her. To see how we hopefully go from spotting and recognising individual letters to her curling up and enjoying a book on her own. It's not going to be a short journey, but it's one that I'm so looking forward to taking with her. I'm determined not to push her unnecessarily, but just to encourage her where she shows an interest and to try to ensure that she understands anything they cover at nursery too.
I'm already collecting learning stories to share and finding some great resources thanks to other parents and things I've found online. I hope to bring them all together in one place and maybe they will help some other parents setting off on the same learning journey. The challenging thing in all this is going to be staying one step ahead of her – I fear I may have to do my homework!
